In 1996 Tom Peifer, an agroecologist, writer and builder from California took on the mission of regenerating a section of a 500-acre reforestation project near Paraiso, Costa Rica. In the last decade he has restored this seasonal pasture and spiny jungle thicket to a sustainable farm and research facility and educational institute called El Centro Verde (ECV). Tom has developed methods and educational programs around managing farms and forests while making the best use of soil, energy, water and other resources. www.elcentroverde.org

In this weekend workshop we will learn:

1. Why low-input local agriculture is important locally and globally.

2. Soil Management as the key in creating a sustainable garden and growing organic food.

3. The ABC's of permaculture, bio-intensive, and other gardening methods, approaches, and techniques proven to work in our area.

4. Hands on practical techniques for water management in the wet and dry seasons; water harvesting in the wet season, and irrigation systems including mulch, and sunken beds for the dry season.

5. Why erosion control is important, and how to better understand and control erosion, with an emphasis on the vetiver system.

6. Practical creative techniques for: erosion control, composting, water saving, and storage.

7. An overview of the ideal wet season/dry season crops to cultivate for food
here: tubers, tree spinach, perennial greens, herbs, annual and perennial vegetables, varieties, seed saving, rotations. medicinals, bamboo, fruit species.

8. Seeds; how to germinate, select and store, propagation and cuttings.
9. Local materials such as Agrichar that will enhance your soil fertility and increase plant      productivity, and about converting forest refuse into improved soil.
